This custom position sensor was developed to monitor the position of the shift rail inside a construction vehicle gearbox. A combination of either two or three sensors is deployed in each transmission to detect the selection of up to five gears.
The transmission position sensor monitors the position of the U-shape target activator, which is machined into the top of the shift arm. As the operator changes gear, the sensor outputs the position of the shift arm as an analogue voltage or PWM signal.
Gill’s non-contact induction technology was chosen due to the harsh operating conditions inside the gearbox housing: extremes of temperature and vibration; transmission oil submersion. With no moving sensor parts and no contact with the moving shift rail, this sensor offers excellent long-term reliability helping to reduce vehicle maintenance costs.
This transmission position sensor was designed according to the exact requirements of the construction vehicle manufacturer. The sensor was designed to be installed through the transmission case, with an O-ring seal designed into the mounting face to ensure an air-tight seal is maintained. Each sensor is supplied to the customer factory-calibrated, eliminating the requirement for any setup or calibration on the vehicle assembly line.
