// Non-Contact Displacement Transducer
DualCavity™Dual Cavity is a non-contact displacement transducer capable of monitoring linear and angular movement, with the range determined by the shape of the moving 'activator'
Dual Cavity is a unique non-contact displacement transducer that uses induction technology to detect the presence of a metallic object (‘activator’) within each of the transducer’s two open sensing holes. This unique arrangement allows for a wide range of linear or angular motion to be monitored and various output characteristics to be generated simply by changing the shape of the activator.
The Dual Cavity displacement transducer’s analogue output varies symmetrically about 2.5 Volts - the output level with no activator present. This 2.5V is termed the "output reference voltage" and the nature and extent of variation from this reference level depends on the design and material of the activator. As standard this displacement transducer suits a total movement of 30 to 50mm travel at the sensing holes to get full-scale output with a good linear response.
The two sensing holes have opposite effects. Introducing an activator into the positive hole sends the level up from 2.5V, and into the negative hole down from 2.5V. This arrangement is extremely flexible, allowing a range of response characteristics to suit many applications. Good linearity can be obtained where required, and various types of non-linear behaviour can also be generated. For linear behaviour the activator arms are typically tapered and symmetrical.
With normal tolerances the unit-to-unit repeatability is highly consistent. Typically this displacement transducer and activator arrangement provides much better long-term reliability and repeatability than a conventional linkage mechanism that is hostage to tolerance build-up, backlash, wear and damage.
The Dual Cavity displacement transducer is also available as a dual-output device. In this format each of the sensing holes produces a separate analogue output. This is particularly suitable for customers looking to monitor two individual movements with one transducer, for example monitoring brake and accelerator pedals with a separate metallic activator mounted to each.
- Suited to linear and angular measurement – output characteristics determined by activator shape and materials
- Environmentally protected to IP67 – Suitable for full submersion
- Perfect for dusty, high vibration, high temperature and moist environments
- Low cost – well suited to high volume OEM applications
- No contact with moving part(s) – excellent reliability
We have the ability to produce custom variants of the Dual Cavity displacement transducer for applications where the current electrical or mechanical specifications are not suitable. We are often able to combine the standard electronic platform with a new custom housing specific to the application which helps to keep development costs to a minimum.

The DualCavity displacement transducer is suitable for monitoring linear and rotary displacement in most harsh environment applications. Some application ideas are shown below, both for the standard transducer and a customised variant of the technology.
-
Pedal Position Monitoring
This pedal has an angular measurement range of approximately ±35°. In this installation only the top and bottom 15° (pedal limits) are monitored, which is governed by the shape of the activator mounted to the rotating axis of the pedal.

Throttle Valve Monitoring
This custom variant of the Dual Cavity displacement transducer is mounted to the exterior of a motorcycle throttle body, monitoring the rotating activator which is hard-mounted to the rotating valve inside the throttle body. The total rotation is approximately 90°.
